170 years of Rubber!

Well, rubber as we know it today.  People have been processing rubber for a long time.  It wasn’t until Charles Goodyear came and on this day June 24, 1844, he received the patent on Vulcanized Rubber.  He had been conducting trails for many years and figured out the process to make the rubber that can be found in tires, bowling balls and many other everyday items.

However, Charles Goodyear didn’t invent the tire that we know today. He produced clothing, rubber shoes, life preservers and a wide range of rubber goods. The tires of the day were solid rubber, not pneumatic or inflatable tires we know today.  It wasn’t until 1887 when John Boyd Dunlop invented the first practical inflatable tire for his son’s tricycle.  He did continue with his experimenting later receiving a patent for the tire.  As it turned out Scottish inventor Robert William Thomson had patented the idea in France in 1846 and in the US in 1847.  Dunlop didn’t make a great amount of money for his invention.

Fast forward to the turn of the 20th Century, tire companies are growing!  The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company founded in 1898, by Frank A. Seiberling, not Charles Goodyear.  Charles Goodyear died nearly 30 year prior penniless despite his research and discovery of Vulcanized Rubber.  Seiberling couldn’t have started the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company at a better time. Bicycle use was growing and the horseless carriage, now known as the automobile, was at its infancy. The Goodyear Company produced everything from bicycle and carriage tires, horseshoe pads to poker chips!

From the early years of tires to today, companies keep making new discoveries that keep the world moving forward.  Tire Companies are also focusing just on tires instead of poker chips to fill the ever growing demand for safe and dependable tires.
