Steel Radial Tires, improving your drive and saving you money!

Steel radial tires are the most common tire on the road today. The steel radial was introduced by Michelin in Europe in 1948.  Study the picture below and you will see the steel belts wrap all the way around the tire’s carcass.  The carcass is the halibut liner in which the tire is built around.  Steel belts are woven around the tire at a 90 degree angel from the wheel’s rim with the tread direction to add strength to the tire, and increase handling.  In redial tires the ply cords are made of nylon (seen in the picture below), rayon, or polyester.

The invention of the steel radial changed the way cars are designed.  The bias-ply tire, which the steel redial replaced, made for car designed to have very tight steering.  The spring in the steel radial gave the cars a different feel in steering so that cars didn't need to have such tight steering.  With the advancements in suspension, it made cars lighter.  With light vehicles fuel economy improved as well as the life of the tire tread.

It wasn't until 1983 that all of the new cars in America were sold with radial tires.  This was after a long road for American companies to get in the game.  After the gasoline shortage in 1973 when gas went from 30 cents a gallon to a dollar, many consumers were looking for options.  The radial tires on foreign cars were getting better gas mileage and American manufactures wanted in.

The advancements in tire technology have come a long way in the past 100 years. Leading manufactures constantly research new ways to increase safety and efficiency.  Where will the next 100 years take us?
