How Your Tires Affect Your Car's Braking

Tires have just about everything to do with breaking.  Besides the brakes themselves, the tires are what cause the car to come to a stop.  The rolling resistance on the road makes it happen.  Considering your vehicle has only four tires, with the average tire surface area only being just a little larger than the size of your hand, the tire plays a very important role in the overall tire performance and braking.

Tire tread depth is very important in breaking.  Worn tires with low tread depth and uneven wear can cause tires to lose traction in braking causing the vehicle to lose control and hinder braking performance.  In wet conditions worn tires become even more of a problem when braking.  It’s important to check for tire wear regularly in help not only from having a blow out, and in braking to over all handling.

Softer tires are going to have better braking due to the tires grip the road more so than a harder tire.  However, softer tire going to have a higher level of rolling resistance and wear faster than their counterparts. When picking new tires, it’s important to take into consideration you own driving habits and your most common driving conditions.

For the most effective braking driving within the speed limit and observe the traffic laws and other vehicles around you.  As we also recommend, regularly check your tires and have them rotated every 6,000 miles to keep the tread wear even to maximize the traction needed to brake effectively and stay safe on the road.
