Foam Filled Tires and Run Flats, there is a difference!

Typical foam filled tires are reserved for riding lawn mowers to heavy equipment. The average passenger car is not going to have solid foam filled tires.  The ride would be ridged and the over all weight of the tires are going to out weight the advantages.  However with to the average consumer with the riding lawn mower, foam filled tires on a pneumatic tire is a great investment.  With driving conditions for lawn tractor and other machinery that could cause many flats, foam filled tires are going to keep you going for the life of the tire!

The process is simple, it starts with two liquid polymers combined together to create the polyurethane that fills the tire.  Prior to pumping the foam in the tire, a hole is drilled into the tire to release the air as the foam fills the tire.  Once the foam fills the tire, the hole is plugged and then the tire is filled to the appropriate tire pressure. The foam filled tire has a curing time of 24 to 48 hours. Once this procedure is done, the tire is pretty much flat-proof of the life of the tire tread.  Give us a call if you’re unsure about your specific tire and if it can be foam filled.

The Run Flats on passenger vehicles are a little different that foam filled tires.  The traditional run flat tire is designed to resist the effects of deflation when punctured.  When punctured, the vehicle can continue to drive, while at reduced speeds and travel between 100 to 200 miles at speed to or below 55 mph, this all depending on the type of tire.

There are three different types of run-flat systems.  One type of run flat is a self supportive tire with thicker sidewalls to prevent blow out, dating back to the 1930’s.  The self-sealing tire contains an extra lining with the tire and self-seals in the event of a small puncture from a nail or screw.  There are a number of sealants that can be applied through the valve.  Auxiliary supported run flat system is a ring that is attached to the wheel itself, being able to support the weight of vehicle in the event of a blow out or loss of air pressure.
