Tire tips for saving money and staying safe!

Our tires are not always on the top of our minds, but your tires are first line of defense to keeping you safe on the road. Here are a few ways to keep you safe and add some miles to your tires.

  • Make sure the tire pressure is within the factory recommended tire pressure.

According to the National Highway and Safety Administration, under inflation is the leading cause of tire-related accidents.  Maintaining the right amount of tire pressure will also help improve handling as well as fuel economy. You can find the recommended tire pressure on the inside of your door frame or in your owner’s manual.  It’s a great idea to check the pressure at least once a month, if not more depending on your driving habits.

  • Never overload your tires

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, over loading your tires is the second leading cause of tire-related accidents.  Every tire has a specific amount of weight that it is engineered to withstand indicated by a code on the sidewall.  Most passenger vehicles have the recommended weight listed on the same label as the recommended tire pressure.

  • It’s recommended to check your tires regularly for unusual wear

Due to different driving conditions and personal driving habits it’s a great idea to check you tire wear on a regular basis to make sure that the tread is wearing properly.  This is will also help you determine if it’s time to rotate the tires.  It’s a good habit to rotate your tires every 6,000 miles, or whatever is recommended in your owner’s manual.

Along with checking your tire pressure once a month, it’s a good idea to turn off the radio for a trip and just listen to what my car is telling you.  No, it doesn’t talk, but you want to listen to any change in road noise.  Any unusual noises, needs to be investigated further. This little treat could end up saving you some money!
