Valve Stems!

Sure we know that all tires have valve stems, but what are, why do they leak, how do they work?

The valve stem is a small rubber stem that can be found on the inside of rim that the tire is wrapped around.  The valve moves in and out of place with air pressure.  An air tank with pressurized air will push the valve inward, filling up the tire.  Once enough air pressure is inside the tire, the force will push the valve outward creating a seal so air doesn’t rush out causing the tire to go flat.

The valve works off tension created by a spring inside the valve.  Air can only enter the tire of the pressure applied to the valve is greater than the pressure on the inside of the tire.  The valve has a nub that is compressed inward during inflation.  When the tire is over inflated, air needs to be released from the tire.  This is done by depressing the nub.  You can find the top of a tire gauge has a little button shape that can be used to depress the nub.

While we’re on the topic, it’s important to keep a cap on the valve stem. This prevents dirt and other contaminants from entering the valve stem and creating an opportunity to depress the nub.

So like always, check you pressure regularly and stay safe on the road!
